I find this story to be absolutely amazing. The sheer stupidity of this customer has me baffled.
March 20th: Customer approaches Walk-up window and requests to close his account. Teller asks if he's sure he wants to do that. Customer says yes. Teller closes account and gives customer $1.77. Customer asks if there will be any problem with his direct deposit on the 31st. Teller informs him that it will reject because his account is now closed. Customer walks away satisfied.
March 31st: Customer approaches Walk-up window with slip from ATM stating that his card is invalid. I look up account to find problem. I find original teller who closed the account and asked what the story was. She tells me the story, then tells me to call the main office and ask if we reopen his account, can the direct deposit be posted again. I call up and they inform me it can't be done. He'd have to wait until Monday. I inform him what happened, and tell him that he'll have to wait until Monday to get his money. He walks away in a huff. An hour later, he's back at the window. He wants a better explanation than what we've already given him.
"Sir, you closed out your account. We can't put money into an account that isn't open."
"I've done it before, and there wasn't a problem."
"No, you didn't. You took all the money out in previous times. This time, you asked to close it, so that's what she did. She told you the money wouldn't go into the account if it was closed."
"I'm saying, I've done it before."
"And I'm saying you didn't. We can reopen your account, but we can't repost your deposit until Monday."
"I'm saying...."
And it went on like that for a couple more minutes. How thick can one man be? I think I should've used this analogy:
Your bank account is like a 40. If your 40 is open, you can take out as much beer as you want. You can also put in whatever you want. If that 40 is closed, however, nothing goes in or comes out.
That's more his style.
